Efeito Do Extrato De Piper Tuberculatum Sobre Adultos De Schistosoma Mansoni: Testes in Vitro E in Vivo

Abstract: Schistosomiasis is a severely neglected disease with a wide geographical distribution. It affects approximately 210 million people in the world and at least 800 million people live in risk areas. The search for new drugs to treat this parasitosis is significant due to the appearance of strains of the worm that are resistant to the currently available drugs. The retrieval of compounds extracted from plants that act on these parasites has increased scientific investigation of this subject. The present study demo… Show more

“…Simões et al . (2015) also demonstrated that the crude extract of P. tuberculatum is capable of acting internally in female worms, modifying some regions of the vitelline glands. However, the alterations in the female reproductive system are yet less explored; hence, the details mentioned in our study should be considered, as they may provide valuable information on new drug targets.…”

“…According to Matos-Rocha et al (2016), internal changes were also verified by transmission electron microscopy; the presence of vacuoles was found in the region of the syncytial matrix and of glycogen granules close to muscle fibres in adult worms of S. mansoni treated with the essential oil of Mentha x villosa leaves (500 μg mL −1 ), similar to the tegumentary dilations found in our study. “…Authors recorded that the efficacy of praziquantel (PZQ) (the drug of choice) had been reduced as antischistosomal [ 13 , 14 ]. Scientists are still searching for antiparasitic drugs from natural origin for the development of new medications [ 15 , 16 ].…”

“…Schistosomias is endemic in tropical and sub-tropical regions and is estimated to kill 200 000 people per year and generally infects more than 210 million people (Simões et al, 2015;WHO, 2017). It was reported that around 800 million people globally are at high risk of getting Schistosomiasis (Simões et al, 2015).…”

“…Schistosomiasis infects more than 210 million peoples worldwide, whereby 91.4% occurs in African countries contributing to about 200 000 deaths annually (WHO, 2002;Rollinson et al, 2013;Simões et al, 2015). Furthermore, it's estimated that more than 800 million people are at risk of getting this disease globally (Simões et al, 2015). In Tanzania schistosomiasis is endemic all over the country; however the extent of endemicity is more pronounced in islands and regions bordering Lake Victoria.…”
