Zeolites are minerals that have intriguing properties such as water absorption, ion adsorption and cation exchange capacity. There are approximately 80 species of natural zeolites recognized and hundreds of artificial zeolites, which have been researched in several fields. Due to their chemical characteristics, zeolites have great potential for use in animal production, especially in poultry and swine farms, as food additives, litter amendment and treatment of residues, with direct and indirect effects on performance, yield and quality of carcass, ambience of farm sheds and reduction of environmental pollution.

The reduction in litter particle size results in lower moisture content, higher density and lower height during the grow out period, minimizing the incidence of tibial diseases (Lima & Nääs, 2005) and lesions in the tarsal-metatarsal joint, footpads and breast (Oliveira et al, 2004). The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of different litter materials on litter compaction, broiler feathering and the incidence of carcass lesions. In the experiment, 3240 one-day-old Ross ® chicks were selected by sex and distributed according to a completely randomized experimental design in a 2 x 6 factorial arrangement (two sex and six litter materials). The following litter materials were used: wood shavings, rice husks, chopped Napier grass, 50% sugar cane bagasse plus 50% wood shavings, 50% sugar cane bagasse plus 50% rice husks, and pure sugar cane bagasse. Litter compaction was weekly assessed using a penetrometer. On days 21, 35 and 42 of the experimental period, feathering on the back and legs was scored according to a 0 -10 scale. On day 42, birds were slaughtered and the presence of bruises, scratches and footpad lesions was recorded. Litter material had no effect on bird feathering. Carcass lesions (scratches, bruises and footpad lesions) were influenced by the litter material evaluated. Birds reared on sugarcane bagasse and chopped Napier grass presented more scratches, bruises and footpad lesions than the others. Dermatitis was more evident in birds reared on sugarcane bagasse, chopped Napier grass and the combination of litter materials. It was found that males presented higher incidence of dermatitis and footpad lesions than females. Each litter material presented different compaction degrees, which increased along the experimental period. Sugarcane bagasse, chopped Napier grass and the combination of bedding materials presented the highest degree of compaction, compared with wood shavings and rice husks.

A eficiência fertilizante da cama de aves depende da capacidade de mineralização de seus nutrientes que se encontram na forma orgânica. O potencial poluente deste resíduo, por outro lado, depende, dentre outros fatores, da rapidez da nitrificação dos compostos nitrogenados. O presente estudo objetivou quantificar a mineralização líquida e a nitrificação do N presente na cama de aves após sua aplicação em um Cambissolo Húmico álico. Os tratamentos consistiram na incubação com o solo de doses de cama (equivalente a 0; 4; 8; 16 Mg ha -1 ) e uma dose de ureia (204 kg ha -1 de N), todas incorporadas ou aplicadas sobre a superfície do solo. Determinaram-se os teores de amônio e nitrato no solo aos 2, 6, 12, 19, 26, 32 e 48 dias após o início da incubação. Os teores de amônio diminuíram e os de nitrato aumentaram com o tempo de incubação em função do processo de nitrificação; esta conversão foi mais rápida quando a cama de aves foi incorporada ao solo em relação à aplicação na superfície. A recuperação do N da cama de aves na forma mineral foi pequena, independentemente da forma de aplicação ao solo, com valores que decresceram em função da dose de 22,0 para 15,7% para as doses 4 e 16 Mg ha -1
