EEG Waveform Analysis of P300 ERP with Applications to Brain Computer Interfaces

Abstract: The Electroencephalography (EEG) is not just a mere clinical tool anymore. It has become the de-facto mobile, portable, non-invasive brain imaging sensor to harness brain information in real time. It is now being used to translate or decode brain signals, to diagnose diseases or to implement Brain Computer Interface (BCI) devices. The automatic decoding is mainly implemented by using quantitative algorithms to detect the cloaked information buried in the signal. However, clinical EEG is based intensively on wa… Show more

“…These signals can be recorded using different methods. These records, called electroencephalogram (EEG), contain a lot of information related to the work of the brain and other organs of the body [1,2,3]. This information also allows us to obtain information about both cognitive and sensory stimulation [1].…”

“…The fast Fourier transform (FFT) decomposes time-domain data into frequency-domain data by determining a series of sine and cosine functions of different frequencies which may be added to obtain the time-domain data. [16]. The FFT can be used to determine the power spectral density, a measure of the strength of an EEG signal at a given frequency.…”

“…This type of neuroimaging has been used as a detection method for neurodegenerative diseases. For example, analyzing the sharpness of the brain signals is commonly used to detect epilepsy [13]. Thus, EEG studies can show how the activity in an ALS brain is changing or degenerating, offering specialists further comprehension of a disease whose evolutive nature is still unknown.…”
