EEG dataset and OpenBMI toolbox for three BCI paradigms: an investigation into BCI illiteracy

Abstract: Background Electroencephalography (EEG)-based brain-computer interface (BCI) systems are mainly divided into three major paradigms: motor imagery (MI), event-related potential (ERP), and steady-state visually evoked potential (SSVEP). Here, we present a BCI dataset that includes the three major BCI paradigms with a large number of subjects over multiple sessions. In addition, information about the psychological and physiological conditions of BCI users was obtained using a questionnaire, and task-… Show more

“…Each stimulus was presented for 3.5 s with an inter-stimulus interval of 4 s. The visual stimuli were generated using the Psychophysics Toolbox in Matlab. We followed the SSVEP paradigm of a previous study [38]. Figure 1 shows the experimental setup about measurement, experimental tools, and channel placement.…”

“…The presentation order was randomized, and non-target stimuli were flashed consecutively in order to avoid the repeated flashing of the same target stimulus between the sequences. The paradigm code was developed with the Psychophysics Toolbox and OpenBMI [30] in Matlab (MathWorks, MA, USA).…”

“…EEG signal processing was conducted using a BBCI toolbox [47] and an OpenBMI toolbox [48] in a MATLAB 2019a environment. The EEG data were band-pass filtered between 1 to 50 Hz using a second-order zero-phase Butterworth filter and were down-sampled from 1000 Hz to 100 Hz.…”
