Educational tool for radial electrical distribution networks analysis and optimization studies involving distributed generation units

Abstract: The interest in optimization problems involving distributed generation units has grown among undergraduate and graduate students since distributed generation unit connections have been encouraged around the world, requiring efficient power system analysis tools to solve them. The available open access tools are commonly focused on transmission network analysis. On the other hand, commercial tools adapted to radial networks do not allow the students to follow the intermediary calculations and learn with them. I… Show more

“…The most anticipated expectation from programs designed for educational purposes is the flexibility to carry out research and education objectives, and their ability to perform simple and basic calculations. Although there are several programs in this field, they are not suitable for individual use due to their high costs [26][27][28][29][30]. It is known that the electric power systems can be thought of as the group power transmission lines carrying energy from the power generation facilities to the end-user.…”

“…The development and features of an Excel Workbook that illustrates several methods for load flow estimation were presented in Reference [1]. A new load flow tool focused on radial distribution networks with high levels of unbalanced loads was presented in Reference [10]. A new free and open‐source computer platform to conduct power flow simulations was described in Reference [33].…”

“…21 Battery storage and electrical vehicle are the common devices in the MG 22 considered in this work. For the young electrical engineer, it is necessary to understand and analyze the RDN of MG. 23 Reactive power support improves the voltage level and prevents the MG from the instability and improves the consistency. 24 The principal objective of the work is to make the electrical engineers to understand how to reduce the operating cost, improve the voltage, and reduce the losses.…”
