“…A score of ≥16 indicates the presence of depressive symptoms. To differentiate between patients with moderate or severe depressive symptoms, the following cut-off scores of the CES-D were used: 0-15 (no depressive symptoms), [16][17][18][19][20][21][22][23] (moderate depressive symptoms), and ≥24 (severe depressive symptoms). 9 Compliance with recommendations on a sodium-restricted diet, fluid restriction, exercise, and daily weighing was measured using the Revised Heart Failure Compliance Scale.…”

“…Although knowledge alone does not ensure compliance 16 , it has nevertheless been confirmed as an important determinant of compliance in the HF literature. [17][18][19][20] An explanation for low compliance with weighing could be that many HF patients do not recognize the importance of daily weighing to check for fluid retention. 16 Also, having a stable weight over a longer period of time is another reason why patients weigh themselves less often.…”

“…18 Congruent with this observation, a recent study reported that only 34% of patients consume Ͻ3000 mg and only 15% consume Ͻ2000 mg sodium daily based on their 24-hour urinary sodium excretion. 20 Sodium consumption Ͻ2000 mg/d is difficult to achieve even with dietician education, 21 and studies have demonstrated that sex 22 and race 23 affect dietary preferences and adherence to sodium restriction recommendations in patients with HF.…”

“…Recent studies highlight an alternative hypothesis that low sodium diets in conjunction with high-dose diuretics and fluid restriction could be harmful and in two studies has actually shown to promote increases in hospital readmission and death in patients with HF (Arcand et al, 2011;Paterna et al, 2009;Paterna, Gasparo, Fasullo, Sarullo, & Di, 2008). Arcand et al (2005) observed trends toward reduced blood pressure in patients with HF after three months of education on a 2 gm sodium diet. Additionally, those who had two individualized education sessions with a registered dietitian had significant decreases in blood pressure.…”
