Background: Oral health is integral to overall well-being, and understanding the behavior, knowledge, and practices of medical and dental undergraduates regarding oral health is crucial in healthcare education. Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the behavior, knowledge, and practice of medical and dental students in relation to oral health. Methodology:  This study employed a descriptive cross-sectional design to assess oral health behavior, knowledge, and practice among medical and dental undergraduates at Peshawar Medical and Dental College. Data collection involved distributing a three-part questionnaire to 385 participants on-site, ensuring convenience and consistency. Participants were required to provide voluntary consent, and statistical analysis using SPSS version 25 generated descriptive statistics to summarize responses, including frequencies, percentages. Results: In our study 49.6% (n=191) believed in brushing after meals, 41.3% (n= 159) associated excess food consumption with dental caries, and 62.6% (n= 241) recognized bleeding gums as a sign of inflammation. Additionally, 55.6% (n= 214) thought regular brushing prevents all dental problems. Notably, 91.9% (n= 354) acknowledged sugar's role in tooth decay, while 88.1% (n= 339) linked dental plaque with caries. Most participants (87.8%, n= 338) believed fluorides strengthen teeth, and 89.6% (n= 345) recognized a link between overall body health and oral health. Majority (51.9%, n= 200) brushed teeth twice daily, with popular additional methods being mouthwash (31.4%, n= 121) and Miswak (30.4%, n= 117). Additionally, 50.9% (n= 196) adhered to the recommended 2-minute brushing duration. Dietary habits varied, with 44.7% (n= 172) consuming sweets 2-4 times daily, and soft drink consumption being prevalent once a week (51.2%, n= 197). Smoking prevalence was low, with 8.1% (n= 31) admitting to smoking. Conclusion:The study reveals both strengths and areas for improvement in oral health behaviors among medical and dental undergraduates. While many students adhere to recommended brushing practices, there's a need to enhance education on oral hygiene, brushing duration, and dietary habits. Tailored interventions are essential to promote healthier behaviors among future healthcare professionals, ensuring their preparedness to deliver comprehensive oral healthcare.

ObjectivesAs part of geriatric education at the University of British Columbia's Faculty of Dentistry, undergraduate students are required to interview an older adult over 65 years old and critically reflect in writing on the meaning of this interview to themselves and their professional lives in not more than 2000 words. They are also encouraged to use a life grid. This study explored the impact of this assignment on the students as learners and on their views about their profession.MethodsInterview assignments were collected from the entire cohort of 54 third‐year students in 2021 and analyzed in 5 stages, using an exploratory thematic analysis, including an interactive coding process to identify patterns (themes) within the assignments using NVivo R1 software. Two researchers coded assignments individually and met to reach a consensus about the codes, to mitigate potential biases.ResultsFive main themes were identified, including communication, life course journey, person‐centered care, social determinants of health, and access to care. A wide range of ideas emerged under each theme, including several practical suggestions to improve future practice as an oral health professional. A little over 40% of the students used the life grid in their interviews. Modifications on the interview assignment are suggested.ConclusionStudents’ reflections highlighted their observations on a wide range of ideas within each theme, many pertaining to their future profession. They also discussed how this knowledge would inform their future practice in terms of their interactions with, and providing care to, patients with similar situations.

Conceptualizing patient interactions eliciting empathy, compassion, reflection, and social projection: A model with analysis

ObjectivesConceptualizing the next patient interaction is logical, essential, and largely done intuitively with limited literature. The first objective is to elicit student thought experiences to four questions. The secondary objective is to classify responses for respective questions and to review faculty assessments.MethodsForty‐two students completed the exercise in the first clinical prosthodontics experience after a simulation course, in the fall of 2023. Four open‐ended questions were 1) differentiation from the ideal, 2) desired outcome(s), 3) self‐capabilities, and 4) consequences/prognosis. Nine different faculty assessed the exercise.Results100% of students responded to all four questions and 83% of responses were judged by faculty to grasp the concept in the question. The authors categorized responses into natural categories for each question. Authors separately assigned responses to categories. The agreement rate was 90%. Little to no overlap in responses was observed among the four questions. The sequence of questions led students to thought experiences from empathy in Question #1, to compassion in Question #2, and to self‐reflection in Question #3 to social projection in Question #4.ConclusionsThe main objective was met by engaging students in thought‐provoking responses to questions the experienced clinician asks of every patient encounter. The exercise elicited different kinds of thought experiences on four topics. The format was succinct with acceptance by students and faculty. The project has progressed from a concept some years ago to a recent pilot to full implementation with the current project. The next steps will be refinement and follow‐up in some years. The project follows an emulation model for critical thinking.
