Condillac’s (1754) “Traité des sensations” is the philosophical background of modern discussions on the relationship between perception and multimodal communication. The differences between perception and communication and the transitions between them are discussed with a focus on odor and color. It becomes clear that even at this primary level, the complex interactions of different modalities are the precondition for effective and rich communication. The second part discusses Cassirer’s “Philosophy of Symbolic Forms” as a relevant framework for multimodality studies. Basic aspects are first commented on with a focus on music and visual art. The interaction is even more complex and rich in the case of language; the difficulty of large symbolic forms is mainly due to semantic composition and only to a lesser degree to syntactic concatenation. The first must merge/blend different semantic spaces. It must allow for the plurality of levels of integration from the lexical level, the level of phrases and sentences, up to texts and discourse. The third part focuses on multimodality in film. It treats the representation of movement and action in (film) narratives, the visual perception and representation/communication of movement and action, and the integration of music, moving images, and language.

The past decades have seen an explosion of research using electrophysiological or neuroimaging techniques for studying the neurocognitive underpinnings of second language (L2) processing. Although this field has a shorter history than does research on language learning more generally, important insights into the neurocognitive basis of L2 processing have driven it to the center stage of language science. In this target article for Language Learning’s 75th Jubilee volume, I illustrate the field's impressive achievements by selectively reviewing electrophysiological and neuroimaging research on L2 processing and bilingual brain organization. I also review changing perspectives in the field (including individual difference and experience‐based perspectives, neural network approaches, neuroplasticity, and L2‐learning related neural changes) and identified challenges, promises, and future directions (revisit native‐speaker benchmark, increase linguistic diversity, enhance ecological validity, intensify research on child L2 learners’ brain, adopt lifelong approach to L2 learning) that can lead to a better understanding of the neural underpinnings of L2 learning and processing.

Demonstratives are cross-linguistically widespread deictic expressions. Demonstrative systems exhibit variation in number of terms, and parameters affecting their usage. The present paper assesses the relationship between spatial deixis and bilingualism: how language dominance affects speakers of two languages with different demonstrative systems. Here, we compare the use of demonstratives by 72 European Spanish-Catalan simultaneous bilinguals in Mallorca to 30 European Spanish monolinguals. Our results confirmed a significant effect of physical distance between speaker and referent on demonstrative choice in both languages, and differences between languages in the use of the middle term. We did not find the expected effect of language dominance in simultaneous bilinguals. Moreover, we found no influence of the hearer's position on demonstrative choice in monolinguals or bilinguals in European Spanish or Majorcan Catalan. In view of our results, the present study contributes to the debate on how bilingual speakers employ different deictic expressions.
