The article presents a national park not only in the category of an area, but also as an actively managed unit. Empirical studies were conducted based on the data originating from the financial records of Stołowe Mountains National Park (SMNP), Karkonoski National Park (KNP) and the data collected by the Central Statistical Office. The level of tourist oriented function, performed by the territorial communes linked to SMNP and KNP, was researched and the analysis of both parks' activities was conducted. The study allowed presenting the cross-border aspects of area specific nature protection forms. The scale of activities performed by the analyzed units indicates that the power of park's influence as an entity is quite significant. It is of vast importance for the development of a tourist function in the municipalities which are connected by territory and qualifies parks for playing the role of a partner in the cross-border EU projects.
