Driving in low visibility conditions (night time, fog or heavy precipitation) is particularly challenging task with an increased probability of traffic accidents and possible injuries. Road Nail is a solar powered intelligent road marking system of wirelessly networked signaling devices that improve driver safety in low visibility conditions along hazardous roadways. Nails or signaling devices are autonomous nodes with capability to accumulate energy, exchange wireless messages, detect approaching vehicles and emit signalization light. We have built an experimental test-bed that consists of 20 nodes and a cellular gateway. Implementation details of the above system, including extensive measurements and performance evaluations in realistic field deployments are presented. A novel distributed network topology discovery scheme is proposed which integrates both sensor and wireless communication aspects, where nodes act autonomously. Finally, integration of the Road Nail system with the cellular network and the Internet is described.K e y w o r d s: road safety, smart roads, wireless sensor network, vehicle-to-infrastructure

-Train detection technologies are universal to all modern railway signal and control systems. They are essential for managing the movement of vehicles across entire transport networks, and to ensure their safe operation. In this paper we investigate the feasibility of a new train monitoring capability based on passive radar technology. The system exploits signal transmissions from the railways' GSM-Railway (GSM-R) radio communications infrastructure, and has the potential to determine the positions and velocities of trains over any section of a railway network where there is GSM-R coverage. A theoretical ambiguity function analysis on directly measured GSM-R waveforms suggest that targets can be detected with axial range resolutions of approximately 850 m, and velocities down to less than 1 mph. To demonstrate proof-of-concept, a series of experiments were carried out using a software-defined GSM-R passive radar system. The results show the first detections of trains at bistatic ranges of just over 1 km moving at various speeds. There are now hundreds of thousands of miles of railway track covered by GSM-R globally, with many more countries planning to rollout systems nationally. The results therefore imply that GSM-R based passive radar technology could be used to develop low-cost train monitoring capabilities worldwide alongside the existing GSM-R radio communications infrastructure.

Abstract:Passive radars get benefit from transmitter signals in the environment for target detection. One of the most important challenges in these radars is multipath and direct path interferences that enter the target and reference antennas. This article expressed the types of weakening, and multi-step structure to mitigate the mentioned signals in passive radars. In the RF-band Interference Attenuation (RFIA) Method, at the first step the strongest interference component is mitigated by controlling the phase and amplitude. In next steps, other interference components are similarly nulled. This structure leads to separate mitigation for each interference components. Simulation results show the success of RFIA method to reduce dynamic range of analog-to-digital converter and, accordingly, the number of required bits for this converter.
