Quelle place la photographie d’art pourrait-elle prendre en sciences sociales ? Ce texte, écrit à deux mains, décrit un travail de collaboration entre un photographe et une anthropologue pour saisir ses impasses, ce qu’elles nous apprennent de nos métiers, et les pistes pour des travaux futurs. Ce cheminement débute par la confrontation de dualités, celle de champs (art et ethnologie) et de catégories (artistique et documentaire). Il se poursuit par une analyse de l’attention à l’imperceptible que le chercheur comme l’artiste explorent et exposent. L’introduction situe une collaboration qui a pris sa source dans une double question de recherche, celle de l’analyse de la perception, mais aussi une question méthodologique plus située concernant les formes, sensibles, sur lesquelles l’attention de l’ethnologue pouvait s’arrêter pour analyser la fabrique d’une capitale culturelle. La photographie est aussi ancrée dans une histoire, au Mali comme dans le champ de l’ethnologie. De cet ancrage naît la rencontre, concrète, entre une ethnologue et un photographe ainsi que des postures qui seront analysées au fil des pages.Le travail réflexif sur cette collaboration n’est pas seulement décrit, il est mis en scène, dans le format d’écriture particulier. Dès la première partie, les auteurs apparaissent à la fois comme des personnages et des sujets. Des personnages, car chaque paragraphe est précédé par le nom, Oumarou Dembele ou Laure Carbonnel, non comme un dialogue retranscrit, mais comme un cheminement de pensée reconstruit, de manière à éviter la confusion des rôles et des intentions. Sujets également, car leur rencontre et parcours (première partie), de même que les impasses et inspirations de cette collaboration (deuxième partie), et l’analyse de leurs pratiques respectives (troisième partie), sont les matériaux sur lesquels porte l’étude de l’articulation entre photographie d’art et ethnologie. Pour cela, le texte s’appuie sur des notes de terrain, sur des souvenirs, sur des versions précédentes de la réflexion. Puis les auteurs commentent leurs propres pratiques (en vidéos, en images et en mots) en partant du travail de photographe et de la différence entre un cliché artistique et ce qu’il appellera en français une photographie documentaire d’un même lieu.Le retour sur notre collaboration fait émerger les présupposés, les projections, les écueils qui ont quelque peu dévié l’objectif premier de la collaboration, mais aussi les inspirations qui ont affleuré de cette rencontre, avec une photographie qui n’est plus seulement un support imagé, mais un préambule à l’analyse, une mise en relation. Mais pourquoi certaines images semblent-elles plus pertinentes que d’autres ? L’analyse d’Oumarou sur son propre travail ouvre un champ réflexif sur le cadre d’observation en ethnologie qui conduit en retour à une analyse pragmatique des clichés artistiques et documentaires faisant émerger comment et pourquoi la photographie artistique et l’ethnologie peuvent s’articuler de manière féconde.
