“…The corals of Stylophora pistillata (Scleractinia) and Gorgonia ventalina (Alcyonacea) were collected at the Saudi Arabian Red Sea (25°39′24.49″N, 36°42′43.46″E, Al Wajh Bank, date 01.02.2016, depth 2 m, water T 17 °C) and the Dutch Caribbean island Sint Eustatius (17°27.877′N, 062°58.645′W, date 26.06.2015, depth 6 m, water T 27 °C), respectively 65 , 66 , 73 , 74 .…”

“…Our dataset increases the knowledge of southwest Puerto Rico's altiphotic and mesophotic fish, coral, and sponge assemblages. We highlight the need to continue monitoring this dynamic ecosystem and emphasize that it is crucial to perform long-term time series assessments of the general area to fully assess any fluctuations in community structure (i.e., abundance, dominant species shift, disease, bleaching) (Wulff, 2001(Wulff, , 2006Easson et al, 2015) and preservation of the overall marine biodiversity (Miloslavich et al, 2010;Jenkins and van Houtan, 2016;Hoeksema et al, 2017). This study demonstrates that altiphotic and mesophotic reefs across the Guánica continental shelf edge support different assemblages of corals, sponges and fish.…”

“…The Greater Caribbean (The Caribbean s.l.) in the present review consists of the Caribbean Sea plus the Gulf of Mexico and Bermuda (Spalding et al, 2007;Hoeksema et al, 2017a). The Caribbean Sea (Caribbean s.s.) is a large semi-enclosed sea of the western Atlantic Ocean with clear and warm water (22-29°C) and low tidal amplitude (0.4 m) (Kinder et al, 1985).…”

“…It is recognized as a global marine biodiversity hot spot and an important biogeographic coral reef province (Spalding et al, 2001;Roberts et al, 2002;Miloslavich et al, 2010;Alvarado, 2011). The Greater Caribbean includes ten marine ecoregions: Northern Gulf of Mexico, Southern Gulf of Mexico, Floridian, Western Caribbean, Greater Antillean, Southwestern Caribbean, Southern Caribbean, Eastern Caribbean, Bahamian, and Bermudian (Burke & Maidens, 2004;Spalding et al, 2007;Hoeksema et al, 2017a). The Bahamian and Bermudian are adjacent to the temperate northwestern Atlantic.…”
