Edible Bird’s nest extract as a chondro-protective agent for human chondrocytes isolated from osteoarthritic knee: in vitro study

Abstract: BackgroundOsteoarthritis (OA) is a degenerative joint disease that results in the destruction of cartilage. Edible Bird’s Nest (EBN) extract contains important components, which can reduce the progression of osteoarthritis and helps in the regeneration of the cartilage. The present study aimed to investigate the effect of EBN extract on the catabolic and anabolic activities of the human articular chondrocytes (HACs) isolated from the knee joint of patients with OA.MethodsA single batch of EBN extract was prepa… Show more

“…This obviously requires replication. An extract of edible bird's nest (which is made from swiftlet saliva), has been shown to have anti-catabolic, anti-inflammatory and pro-anabolic activity on human osteoarthritic chondrocytes (166) . Sesamin, a lignan from sesame seeds has been reported to be chondroprotective in an explant assay, decreasing MMP expression and activation (167) .…”

“…On top of that, investigation of EBN as a chondro-protective agent was carried out in vitro by using human articular chondrocytes that were isolated from knee joint of patients with osteoarthritis [18] . The addition of EBN to the cell cultures slows the progression of osteoarthritis and aided in the regeneration of cartilage.…”

“…Edible bird's nest (EBN) is one of the famous Chinese traditional medicines that are reported to have high nutritional and medicinal values (Chua, Lee, Nagandran, & Yahaya, 2013;Guo et al, 2006;Kim et al, 2012;Marcone, 2005;Goh et al, 2001;Vimala, Hussain, & Nazaimoon, 2012).
