Ediacaran metazoan reefs from the Nama Group, Namibia

Abstract: Reef-building in metazoans represents an important ecological innovation whereby individuals collectively enhance feeding efficiency and gain protection from competitors and predation. The appearance of metazoan reefs in the fossil record therefore indicates an adaptive response to complex ecological pressures. In the Nama Group, Namibia, we found evidence of reef-building by the earliest known skeletal metazoan, the globally distributed Cloudina, ~548 million years ago. These Cloudina reefs formed open framew… Show more

“…For example, the ctenophore-type Eoandromeda is dated at 580-551 Mya (Tang et al, 2011), before the appearance of distinct sponge-type fossils around 548 Mya (Penny et al, 2014). The Cambrian explosion reflects a very rapid radiation of the majority of animal lineages (Erwin and Valentine, 2013) resulting in multiple events of parallel evolution of animal complexity and tissue organization.…”

“…By contrast, mid-ramp settings show longer intervals of constant oxia, where carbonates are expressed as thrombolitic reefs, particularly during the TSTs. These reefs record relatively biodiverse communities of skeletal metazoans, including large reef-building Cloudina hartmanne (Penny et al, 2014; Fig. 18E), large Namacalathus (Fig.…”

“…A range of biological phenomena typically associated with animals first appears during the late Ediacaran interval (~580-541 Myr ago (Ma)), including skeletogenesis 4 , reef building 5 and macroscopic predation 6 . Body fossils of late Ediacaran macro-organisms include at least some early animals 3 , but crucially, most plausible claims for metazoans lie within the diploblasts rather than the Bilateria 3 .…”
