Edge Computing in 5G: A Review

Abstract: 5G is the next generation cellular network that aspires to achieve substantial improvement on quality of service, such as higher throughput and lower latency. Edge computing is an emerging technology that enables the evolution to 5G by bringing cloud capabilities near to the end users (or user equipment, UEs) in order to overcome the intrinsic problems of the traditional cloud, such as high latency and the lack of security. In this paper, we establish a taxonomy of edge computing in 5G, which gives an overview… Show more

“…The dynamic content request intensity and content popularity distribution are modeled using two independent Markov chains. The content requests process arrival to the EN is modeled as a Poisson process with intensity of λ (t) in interval t. Assume that request intensity is generated by an underlying Markov process with |L| states collected in the set L = λ (1) , . .…”

“…In [29], they used VRUs (Vulnerable Road users) to assist in information collecting about road environments, and tell the vehicles about this information and then send it using cellular network. As a result, depending on MEC (Multi-access Edge Computing) [59] bases instead of cloud based cellular infrastructure, they can lower the endto-end latency significantly compared to conventional methods. They proved their results using extensive simulation comparison.…”

“…VANETs naturally inherit basic characteristics of Mobile Ad hoc NETworks (MANETs), but possess special features, such as the high mobility and varying network densities. The future fifth generation (5G) network [3,4] is supposed to provide high reliability and low latency communications. The arrival of 5G greatly promotes the development of Internet of Things (IoT) technology.…”
