Cloud computing has become integral lately due to the ever-expanding Internet-of-things (IoT) network. It still is and continues to be the best practice for implementing complex computational applications, emphasizing the massive processing of data. However, the cloud falls short due to the critical constraints of novel IoT applications generating vast data, which entails a swift response time with improved privacy. The newest drift is moving computational and storage resources to the edge of the network, involving a decentralized distributed architecture. The data processing and analytics perform at proximity to end-users, and overcome the bottleneck of cloud computing. The trend of deploying machine learning (ML) at the network edge to enhance computing applications and services has gained momentum lately, specifically to reduce latency and energy consumed while optimizing the security and management of resources. There is a need for rigorous research efforts oriented towards developing and implementing machine learning algorithms that deliver the best results in terms of speed, accuracy, storage, and security, with low power consumption. This extensive survey presented on the prominent computing paradigms in practice highlights the latest innovations resulting from the fusion between ML and the evolving computing paradigms and discusses the underlying open research challenges and future prospects.

The notion of smart cities has remained under evolution as its global implementations are challenged by numerous technological, economic, and governmental obstacles. Moreover, the synergy of the Internet of Things (IoT) and big data technologies could result in promising horizons in terms of smart city development which has not been explored yet. Thus, the current research aims to address the essence of smart cities. To this end, first, the concept of smart cities is briefly overviewed; then, their properties and specifications as well as generic architecture, compositions, and real-world implementations are addressed. Furthermore, possible challenges and opportunities in the field of smart cities are described. Numerous issues and challenges such as analytics and using big data in smart cities introduced in this study offers an enhancement in developing applications of the above-mentioned technologies. Remote sensing with Unmanned Aerial Systems (UASs) is a game-changer in various fields such as environmental monitoring, surveillance, aerial photography, digital communications, search and rescue operations and military. This paper presents one of the most economical and yet the most effective approaches used in Structural Health Monitoring (SHM). Herein, a review of the recent advances, applications and future perspective of UASs, i.e. drones in SHM is discussed. Drones have become popular in several developed countries in recent years. However, the use of drones is still in the infancy stage of development in developing countries. The development of drones in the last decade has marked a new era in remote sensing, providing data of unprecedented spatial, spectral, and temporal resolution. This is due to the fact that UASs are low cost aerial robots, that require little preparation and infrastructure and can be equipped with any number of sensors or cameras making them ideal for monitoring the environment. To this end, drones offer an opportunity to infrastructures the existing gap between field observations and remote sensing by providing high spatial detail over relatively large areas in a cost-effective way.
