Magnetoresistance (MR) is the variation of a material’s resistivity under the presence of external magnetic fields. Reading heads in hard disk drives (HDDs) are the most common applications of MR sensors. Since the discovery of giant magnetoresistance (GMR) in the 1980s and the application of GMR reading heads in the 1990s, the MR sensors lead to the rapid developments of the HDDs’ storage capacity. Nowadays, MR sensors are employed in magnetic storage, position sensing, current sensing, non-destructive monitoring, and biomedical sensing systems. MR sensors are used to transfer the variation of the target magnetic fields to other signals such as resistance change. This review illustrates the progress of developing nanoconstructed MR materials/structures. Meanwhile, it offers an overview of current trends regarding the applications of MR sensors. In addition, the challenges in designing/developing MR sensors with enhanced performance and cost-efficiency are discussed in this review.

Magnetic flux leakage (MFL) detection methods are widely used to detect pipeline defects. However, it is limited by the detection orientation and magnetization. Besides, bulky excitation systems are incapable of adapting to the complex detection environments. This paper proposes a new Electromagnetic Structured Coupling sensing of merging Alternating Current Field Measurement (ACFM) and MFL within a multi-parameter system for different types of pipeline defects detection. In particular, a novel electromagnetic coupling sensor structure is proposed which enables simultaneous interaction between the excitation modes of Yoke and coil. Magnetic Yoke is integrated to magnetizing the axial pipeline to detect the circumferential surface and subsurface defects while the coil excites the circumferential uniform alternating current field and recognizes the axial defect. The novel structured sensing is highly sensitivity to the detection of both surface and subsurface defects. Simulation and experiments on defects in several samples have been conducted to validate the reliability and efficiency of the proposed system.

Effects of curvature radius on flexible eddy current array sensors for the curved surface of metal components

The flexible eddy current array sensor owns the advantages of high sensitivity and strong adaptability, but the results are always affected by the curvature radius of complex curved surfaces. The relationship between the curvature radius of the curved surface and detection signals for surface-breaking cracks is mainly discussed. The change of magnetic field caused by the curved surface in the present eddy current testing is specially pointed out, which manifest themselves in the compression or enhancement of the testing signal in its peak value and the baseline drifts. Simulation and experimental results indicate that the concave surface weakens the signal, while the convex surface enhances the signal. The signal amplitude decreases with the decrease in the curvature radius for the concave surface, while it is the opposite for the convex surface. Meanwhile, coil spacing significantly affects the amplitude–curvature radius curve. Furthermore, the fluctuation characteristic affected by the curvature radius under different coil spacing is analyzed. The discovery and results will benefit the quantitative evaluation of flexible eddy current array testing.
