Eddy current losses in SMPS transformers round wire windings: a semi-analytical closed-form formula

Abstract: We provide a new closed-form formula that instantly calculates the 2D high-frequency ohmic losses (skin and proximity effects) in round wire windings. It has been obtained by overwriting the classical definition (shown to be erroneous) of the layer copper factor introduced in ID analytical theories. Compared to similar previous formulas, the average error is divided by a factor of thousand. Experimental validation is provided.

“…As an end of this section it has to be mentioned that in recent literature there have been some works in the direction of modeling high frequency losses in layered windings in the forms of analytical solutions ( [13], [19]) or formulas extracted with the use of computer aided FEA ( [11], [12], [20]). However, their limited application fields or the complexity in using their results considerably suppress their main advantage of improved accuracy and Dowell's formula still remains a top preference for quick calculations, especially for laboratory applications.…”
