Ectopic pancreas tissue appearing in a mediastinal cyst

Abstract: Heterotopia of pancreatic tissue is a common developmental anomaly. Although ectopic pancreatic tissue is mostly found in the gastrointestinal tract, localization in the mediastinum is extremely rare. We report a 32-year-old male patient who had an urgent thoracotomy two years ago due to a thoracic surgery. During the thoracotomy fragments of a partly necrotic cystic mass in the right thorax were removed and decortication was performed. Two years later the patient was hospitalized again because of haemoptoe an… Show more

“…Alternatively, isolated ectopic pancreas without anatomical or vascular connections to the normal pancreas is extremely rare. To the best of our knowledge, only 20 cases have been reported previously since the first description of this entity in the literature by Shillitoe and Wilson . Clinical presentation is variable, with atypical chest pain and dyspnea most frequently reported.…”

“…It is presence of pancreatic tissue without anatomic or vascular continuity with the normally developed pancreas. Although it is common to occur intra abdominally from anywhere along distal end of the oesophagus to the colon, it has been reported very rarely in extra abdominal sites such as mediastinal cysts, bronchi, lung, umbilicus and brain [ 6 8 ]. Intra-abdominal HP lesions commonly known to occur intestines although fallopian tubes, lymph nodes and spleen were rare sites [ 9 ].…”

“…Ectopic pancreatic tissue is an uncommon developmental anomaly and mostly occurs in the gastrointestinal tract [1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 14] and rarely in the mediastinum [11], the gallbladder [10] or the retroperitoneum [9]. This condition is usually asymptomatic and rarely complicated by pancreatitis [4], gastrointestinal tract bleeding [3, 6], perforation [5] or malignant transformation [1, 7, 8], based on anatomical location [1].…”

“…Most of the reported cases are located in the stomach or duodenum [1, 2]. The other cases were reported in the lower gastrointestinal tract [1, 2, 3, 4, 5], retroperitoneum [9], biliary system [10] or intrathoracic region [11]. Complete resection of ectopic pancreatic tissue to eliminate the symptoms is the surgical principle [12, 13].…”
