Ectopic eruption of maxillary central incisor through abnormally thickened labial frenum: An unusual presentation

Abstract: Ectopic eruption is a deviation from the normal eruption pattern, making the tooth erupt out of its normal position, and possibly causing resorption of adjacent primary teeth. A wide range of etiological factors may be responsible for ectopic eruption of the teeth, so their management depends on the correction of the established etiological factor. The present case report describes an unusual case of ectopically erupted central incisor encased within an abnormally thickened labial frenum, which was treated by … Show more

“…Gugnani et al, [13] presented a similar case report in which an ectopically erupted central incisor encased within an abnormally thickened labial frenum was orthodontically realigned following a frenectomy. However, in the present case, frenectomy though initially planned was not required because of dramatic occlusal movement of the ectopic tooth after regaining space, thus preventing permanent scar tissue formation common after frenectomy procedure.…”

“…3 Thus patients often seek orthodontic treatment to improve their smile and build confidence. Also ectopically erupted tooth may result in midline shift, 4 root resorption of adjacent teeth, 5 may lead to infection, cyst formation, 6 abnormal growth of jaw, loss of arch length, and abnormal relationship with opposing dentition. 7 As primary teeth have anatomic proximity to the permanent teeth, their trauma can lead to ectopic eruption or impaction of their successors.…”

“…Treatment options for ectopic tooth include observation for spontaneous correction after removal of the etiological agent or orthodontic intervention as soon as sufficient permanent teeth have erupted. 6 Sometimes the ectopically erupted tooth can spontaneously get corrected after the removal of etiological agent, 4 or orthodontics can also be used as a method of intervention for the treatment of ectopically erupted tooth if all the permanent teeth have erupted. 9 In this case, there was a lack of space for 11 in the arch with eruption of all permanent teeth, thus corrective orthodontics was the only option left.…”

“…The ectopic eruption is a deviation from the normal eruption pattern and may occur in permanent teeth for mean reasons, including trauma, infections, cysts, a supernumerary tooth, and crowded dentition [1]. The management of ectopically erupting teeth depends on the correction of established etiological factors, which may include the extraction of retained primary teeth or the removal of cysts or pathologies that are causing the deviated pattern, followed by orthodontic treatment with anchorage control [2]. Failure to treat ectopic eruption can result in a loss of arch length and malocclusion.…”
