ResumoA cafeína é uma das drogas lícitas mais utilizadas em todo o mundo, estando presente em alimentos, bebidas e medicamentos. O alto consumo reflete em altas concentrações deste composto em diversas matrizes ambientais, já que este não é completamente removido pelas etapas de processo convencionais das estações de tratamento. Assim, é de grande interesse o estudo de técnicas eficazes para eliminar este composto do meio ambiente. A adsorção utilizando carvão ativado tem se mostrado uma boa alternativa de tratamento, sendo obtidas elevadas eficiências de remoção. Portanto, o presente trabalho tem como objetivo estudar a remoção da cafeína por adsorção utilizando carvão ativado. Para isso, foram realizados ensaios de adsorção objetivando encontrar as condições mais adequadas de processo considerando os parâmetros de pH, tempo de residência e concentração de sólido adsorvente. Os melhores resultados dos ensaios de adsorção foram obtidos em pH 6, tempo de residência de 50 min e 10 g L -1 de sólido adsorvente onde foi possível atingir 99% de remoção. Ainda, isotermas de equilíbrio para este sistema foram construídas. Foram avaliados os modelos matemáticos de Langmuir e Freundlich, sendo que a isoterma de Langmuir representou melhor o sistema. Os valores obtidos para q máx e K L foram 31,94 mg g -1 e 0,1464 L mg -1 , respectivamente. O método proposto se mostrou eficiente e de baixo custo para a remoção de cafeína. Caffeine removal by adsorption on activated carbon AbstractCaffeine is one of the most commonly legal drugs used in the world, present in food, drinks and medicines. Due to the high consumption, high concentrations of this compound in many environmental matrices are detected, since this is not completely removed by the conventional steps of treatment plants. Therefore it is of great interest the study of effective techniques to remove this compound from the environment. Adsorption using activated carbon has been shown to be a good alternative treatment with high removal efficiencies. Therefore, this paper aims to study the removal of caffeine by adsorption using activated carbon. For this purpose, adsorption tests were carried out aiming to find the most appropriate process conditions considering pH, residence time and concentration parameters of solid adsorbent. The best results of the adsorption tests were obtained at pH 6, residence time of 50 min and 10 g L-1 of solid adsorbent (~99% removal efficiency). Moreover, the equilibrium isotherms were constructed for this system. Langmuir isotherm was mathematical model which better represented the system. The values obtained for qmax, and KL were 31.94 mgg-1 and 0.1464 Lmg-1, respectively. The proposed method was efficient and cost-effective for the removal of caffeine.
