The aim of the study was to use of geochemical, chemical, ecotoxicological and biological indicators for a comprehensive assessment of ecological risks related to the mobility, ecotoxicity and bioavailability of trace elements in the bottom sediment of the Rożnów reservoir. The study found three elements deserving attention in the sediments: cadmium, nickel and chromium. Cadmium proved to be the most mobile and bioavailable, although the total cadmium content and geochemical indicators did not reveal any risk to organisms. Geochemical indicators showed that the sediments are contaminated with nickel and chromium, but both elements had a low bioaccumulation factor. Fractional analysis also revealed relatively low mobility of Cr and Ni and a higher potential risk of bioavailability for nickel. Most of the tested sediment samples had low toxicity in relation to the tested organisms. For H. incongruens, 11% of the samples were non-toxic, 50% of the samples had low toxicity, and 39% of the samples were toxic. For A. fischeri, no toxicity was found in 7% of the samples, low toxicity in 76% of the samples and toxicity in 17% of the sediment samples. The As, Cd, Cu content in the F1 fraction correlated significantly positively with the content of these metals in mussel tissues. Both biotesting and chemical analysis can reveal a potential risk to aquatic organisms. For a real assessment of the ecological risks associated with trace elements, it is necessary to use bioindicators taken from the environment and exposed to trace elements in situ.

Purpose The aim of the study was the calculation of geochemical, ecological, and ecotoxicological indices for the assessment of risk resulting from the presence of trace metals in soil. Methods Around 320 soil points were determined for the tests by the regular square-grid method with a square side equal to 7.5 km. A total of 11 indices were used, including 6 geochemical indices, 1 index assessing potential ecological risk, and 4 indices assessing soil ecotoxicity. Results Two groups of elements were distinguished. The first one included Ni, Cr, and Cu. The calculated geochemical indices generally indicated their natural content and low degree of soil contamination with them and that the elements’ sources were connected with natural processes. The second group included Cd, Pb, and Zn. These elements occur in high concentrations in the studied area, which is influenced by both natural and anthropogenic factors. However, contamination with these elements is heterogeneous in the Małopolska and generally observed in its northwestern part. PCA showed that Cd and Pb had the greatest effect on the degree of soil contamination and pose the greatest potential threat to the soil environment. Heterocypris incongruens proved to be a more sensitive indicator of soil ecotoxicity compared to plant tests. The potential ecological risk index and biotests indicated that most of the soil samples had low potential ecological risk and low ecotoxicity. Conclusion The key to the effective assessment of soil contamination with trace elements is the combined use of geochemical, ecological, and ecotoxicological indices, which allows comprehensive monitoring of soil quality.

Assessment of biotoxicity of three types of landfilled foundry waste on the basis of dehydrogenase activity

The microbiological activity of three types of landfilled foundry wastes, i.e. biologically reclaimed foundry waste (BFW), foundry waste landfilled since the 1990s (LFW) and fresh foundry waste (FFW), was investigated. The wastes originated from a Polish iron and steel foundry which uses organic binders based on phenol–formaldehyde resins and mineral binders to casting production. The physical and chemical properties and dehydrogenase activity (DHA) were determined in the waste samples and local soils. In addition, a pot experiment was performed to determine the effect of the addition of FFW with no microbial activity on soils. Additional correlation analysis was conducted between DHA and other parameters. It was found that biologically reclaimed foundry waste (BFW) showed the highest microbial activity, similar to soils from garden allotments and agricultural fields. The DHA in LFW was about a half lower than BFW. On the other hand, FFW did not show any microbial activity. A pot experiment showed that increasing the percentage of foundry waste relative to soil had a negative effect on DHA, probably as a result of soil dilution rather than the inhibitory effect of contaminants. It was concluded that the optimum addition of FFW to soils is 10% wt, due to the highest value of DHA among the other variants.
