The determination of predicted no-effect concentrations (PNECs) and sediment quality guidelines (SQGs) of toxic chemicals in marine sediment is extremely important in ecological risk assessment. However, current methods of deriving sediment PNECs or threshold effect levels (TELs) are primarily based on laboratory ecotoxicity bioassays that may not be ecologically and environmentally relevant. This study explores the possibility of utilizing field data of benthic communities and contaminant loadings concurrently measured in sediment samples collected from the Norwegian continental shelf to derive SQGs. This unique dataset contains abundance data for ca. 2200 benthic species measured at over 4200 sampling stations, along with co-occurring concentration data for >25 chemical species. Using barium, cadmium, and total polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) as examples, this paper describes a novel approach that makes use of the above data set for constructing field-based species sensitivity distributions (f-SSDs). Field-based SQGs are then derived based on the f-SSDs and HCx values [hazardous concentration for x% of species or the (100 − x)% protection level] by the nonparametric bootstrap method. Our results for Cd and total PAHs indicate that there are some discrepancies between the SQGs currently in use in various countries and our field-data-derived SQGs. The field-data-derived criteria appear to be more environmentally relevant and realistic. Here, we suggest that the f-SSDs can be directly used as benchmarks for probabilistic risk assessment, while the field-data-derived SQGs can be used as site-specific guidelines or integrated into current SQGs.

Spatio-temporal variation in qualitative and quantitative occurrence of malacofauna was analysed in three large lowland dam reservoirs. Differences between the malacofauna of flooded land areas and former river beds persist even in middle-aged reservoirs. Quick turnover of water has a positive effect on mollusc abundance and species richness of the whole reservoir, and on the frequency of occurrence in the former river bed. Considerable dynamics of the malacocoenoses and a possibility to revert to earlier development stages, as a result of considerable disturbance, were observed at an advanced stage of biocoenosis development. Besides water dynamics and composition and distribution of bottom deposits, a significant effect on the malacocoenoses is exerted by dominant species, especially D. polymorpha. Abundance and dominance structure of malacocoenoses determine their role in the ecosystem, including accumulation of phosphorus and heavy metals, and their cycling as a result of filtration activity, faeces production, excretion and trophic transfer. Generally, the quantities of elements, especially heavy metals, accumulated in molluscs, are much smaller than the quantities which flow through the malacocoenoses. A large part of the pool of these elements contained in the shells is excluded from circulation for many years. Food chains seem to have relatively little effect on the transfer of heavy metals in the reservoir.

Abstract-The Musselmonitor (Delta Consult, Kapelle, The Netherlands) is a biomonitor that uses the valve position and the activity of eight Dreissena polymorpha to monitor the water quality. The normal behavior was studied to evaluate whether eight mussels are sufficient for reliable and reproducible data. The Musselmonitor was placed on a location with strong fluctuations of physical and chemical parameters. The results clearly indicate significant correlations between the valve position and the activity of the mussels and several parameters, such as temperature and concentration of suspended material (represented as turbidity and chlorophyll concentration). The valve position also indicates diurnal and seasonal rhythms in the natural behavior. A new data analyzing system was developed for the Musselmonitor, which takes into account the natural fluctuations in the behavior. The sensitivity of the dynamic data analyzing system was evaluated with copper (20, 40, 50, and 80 g/L) in dosage experiments and the results were compared with the existing static alarm system. The study revealed that static threshold levels are insensitive and require a lot of experience. The dynamic alarm system works satisfactorily with the Musselmonitor and is very useful for the detection of discontinuities in the normal behavior.
