Ecotoxicity assessment of the aquatic environment around Lake Kojima, Japan

Abstract: To reduce the impact of chemical substances on the aquatic ecosystem, it is essential to understand their ecotoxicological properties in the natural aquatic environment. Consequently, we conducted an ecotoxicological study on the aquatic environment around Lake Kojima, a man‐made lake located in the southwest of Japan. Lake Kojima receives its chemical inputs mainly from two rivers that flow through various agricultural and industrial areas. For ecotoxicity screening, surface water and sediment samples were co… Show more

“…construction of dams and dykes in these areas to enhance flood protection, land reclamation, and water storage (e.g., Van Eck 1982;Okamura et al 1996;Lie et al 2008), has led to increased retention of large deposits of fine sediments in lakes (Noordhuis et al 2010;Ding et al 2017). As a result of wind-activity, high concentrations of suspended particles quickly attenuate incident light, restricting the euphotic zone to the top surface layer of the water column for elongated periods of time (Haffner and Evans 1974;Umehara et al 2012;De Lucas Pardo et al 2015;Storlazzi et al 2015).…”

“… Obviously, high alkalinity was an unfavorable condition for dechlorination of atrazine using ZVI or thiosulfate. As for the process of using polysulfides, it would produce a large amount of elemental sulfur precipitation that had toxic effects on aquatic species . Therefore, it is urgent to develop a new, facile, and eco-friendly strategy that is suitable for efficiently dechlorinating atrazine under alkaline conditions.…”
