Ecosystems perspective on financial networks: Diagnostic tools

Abstract: The world economy consists of highly interconnected and interdependent commercial and financial networks. Here, we develop temporal and structural network tools to analyze the state of the economy and the financial markets. Our analysis indicates that a strong clustering can be a warning sign. Reduction in diversity, which was an essential aspect of the dynamics surrounding the financial markets crisis of 2008, is seen as a key emergent feature arising naturally from the evolutionary and adaptive dynamics inhe… Show more

“…In the original paper [3] the sole input to the model was the actual US interest rate during the period from 1973 to 2011. Here our aim is to use the same framework and replace the actual input data with 80 theoretical interest rate levels so that we could build an insight into the behaviour of the model dynamics for different levels of fixed interest rate.…”

“…We study fixed interest rates r ∈ [0.01, 0.2] with steps of 0.01 for a theoretical time span of 60 years and longer. All other parameters are the same as those used in [3]. For each r, simulated for 60 years, the analysis is based on averaging over Ω = 1000 realisations, unless otherwise specified.…”
