Ecosystem Quality Assessment and Ecological Restoration in Fragile Zone of Loess Plateau: A Case Study of Suide County, China

Abstract: The Loess Plateau is the world’s largest loess landform region, characterized by a fragile ecosystem and frequent natural disasters that render it highly susceptible to ecological damage, highlighting urgent ecological restoration. We constructed a “Pattern-Service-Stress Ecosystem Quality Assessment Model” based on the connotation of ecosystem quality and the ArcGIS platform, then applied it to Suide County, a representative area of the Loess Plateau, as the research object. Next, using the dispersal ecology … Show more

“…An analysis was conducted on the RSEI and SRSEI anomalies (left) and means (right) in the research region from 2001 to 2021 (Figure 4). According to earlier study findings [65][66][67][68][69], both the RSEI and SRSEI for the anomalies show consistent trend changes, confirming the positive association and pointing to an increase in the ecological environmental quality in the Loess Plateau region. As for the RSEI, the range of anomaly values is between −0.11 and 0.06.…”

“…More researchers have focused on constructing resistance surfaces and exploring methods for ecological corridor identification [7][8][9]. The methods of ecological source identification have been limited to considering natural reserves, morphological spatial patterns [10][11][12], ecological importance, and sensitivity characteristics [13].…”

“…However, the theory concentrates on landscape connectivity while ignoring the community organization of the ecological space [17]. Under the background of ecological conservation [18], scholars are incorporating ecological importance and sensitivity features into the identification framework, considering ecological pressure and ecological quality [13], and using machine learning [19] to construct an ES identification framework. Although multiple processes in ecosystems are considered in this complex method, ESV, a crucial aspect of the ecosystem, has not received sufficient attention.…”

“…China has indeed achieved remarkable ecological restoration from land degradation over the past three decades [30], particularly in the Loess Plateau [31][32][33]. The government has implemented various ecological engineering and conservation policies, such as returning farmland to forest projects, protecting natural forests, and prohibiting grazing and logging [34].…”
