Economy-wide Estimates of Rebound Effects: Evidence from Panel Data

Abstract: Energy consumption and greenhouse emissions across many countries have increased overtime despite widespread energy efficiency improvements. One explanation offered in the literature is the rebound effect (RE), however there is a debate about the magnitude and appropriate model for estimating RE. Using a combined stochastic frontier analysis and two-stage dynamic panel data approach for 55 countries covering 1980-2010, we explore these two issues of magnitude and model. Our central estimates indicate that, in … Show more

“…Saunders [16], Sorrell [17] and many others, including Adetutu, Glass and WeymanJones [36], confirm that improved energy efficiency results in a less than proportionate reduction in energy consumption. In fact, research shows that in the aggregate, increased energy efficiency can lead to increased economic growth [37].…”

“…We could then examine the impacts on CO 2 emissions rather than relying on the income and its threshold as captured by α 1 and α 2 in equation 9. This study adopts Tajudeen et al procedure by replacing E t in equation 9with the drivers such as energy efficiency and structural shift (Adetutu et al, 2016) to arrive at a multivariate model as:…”

“…This paper also expands the concept of efficiency to include allocative efficiency via introducing energy prices in an ad-hoc energy demand equation as in Hunt 2011, Filippini andHunt 2012) and (Lundgren, Marklund et al 2016). In addition, (Adetutu, Glass et al 2016) apply SFA to OECD level data to estimate rebound effects. (Aranda-Usón, Ferreira et al 2012) and (Feijoó, Franco et al 2002) apply SFA to energy use in the Spanish manufacturing sector.…”
