Economies of agglomeration and their relation with industrial productivity in Brazilian municipalities

Abstract: This paper aimed at analysing the effects of economies of agglomeration (location and urbanization effects) on the industrial productivity of Brazilian municipalities between 2010 and 2017, identifying their possible spillover effects on the neighbourhood as a general and also regarding regional groups. In addition, the effects of location economies of the high/medium-high and low/medium-low technology on productivity were analysed. To achieve the aims proposed, an index of industrial development was built as … Show more

“…Only by ensuring maximum improvement of the commuting situation between consumers and quasipublic goods can the optimal allocation of public product resources be achieved. By virtue of the spatial proximity (Raiher, 2019), the enterprises in the cluster can share indivisible public goods and facilities, which might reduce their marginal production costs. However, the expansion of production scales in the cluster might also increase the total energy consumption, thus reduces the efficiency level of regional green development.…”

“…They further identify a productivity premium for firms operating in larger markets. Raiher (2019) finds that industrial specialization in certain regions leads to higher industrial productivity in Brazil. Conversely, Lin et al (2011) find an inverted U-shape relationship between industrial agglomeration and labour productivity.…”
