Economic Values and Regional Economic Impacts of Recreational Fisheries in Mississippi Reservoirs

Abstract: This study estimated the economic benefit of recreational fisheries on two trophy crappie Pomoxis spp. fisheries in Mississippi. We accomplished this by estimating economic impacts of angler expenditures and angler willingness‐to‐pay for fishing trips above current expenditures. Anglers spent 91,811 activity days on Sardis Reservoir in 2006 and 46,036 on Grenada Reservoir in 2007. The total economic impacts to the state were estimated at US$5.83 million on Sardis Reservoir and $2.15 million on Grenada Reservoi… Show more

“…Accordingly, the impacts of hydropower dams on the movements of potadromous fishes, that is, those fishes that complete their entire life cycle in freshwaters, have been largely overlooked. Potadromous fish populations are found in freshwaters across the globe and often have high ecological, economic and social value (Lynch et al, 2016), particularly in hydropower reservoirs (Hutt, Hunt, Steffen, Grado, & Miranda, 2013). However, many potadromous fish populations are critically endangered, extinctions are occurring at a rapid rate (Ricciardi, Rasmussen, Ricciardi, & Rasmussent, 1999), and hydropower dams have been implicated in the decline (Liermann et al, 2012).…”

“…The importance of recreational fisheries has been increasingly recognized in the USA and abroad for their social (Wilde et al 1996;Hickley and Tompkins 1998), economic (Hutt et al 2012), and ecological impacts (McPhee et al 2002;Coleman et al 2004). However, the diffuse nature of access and heterogeneity in preferences of anglers makes managing recreational fisheries particularly challenging.…”

“…Direct economic effects are the direct or actual revenues that are generated by the expenditures of anglers to local businesses, industries, and services within the local economy. Indirect effects include the transition of dollars from a primary business to a secondary business for services such as resupplying goods and maintenance of facilities and equipment, and induced effects are the impacts generated by household purchases made by employees of the primary and secondary businesses (Hutt et al 2013). In this study, TEA is defined as the measure of monetary contributions of all angling to South Dakota's economy that are generated by anglers.…”
