Economic Value Assessment and Optimal Sizing of an Energy Storage System in a Grid-Connected Wind Farm

Abstract: This study identifies the optimal management policy of a given energy storage system (ESS) installed in a grid-connected wind farm in terms of maximizing the monetary benefits and provides guidelines for defining the economic value of the ESS under optimal management policy and selecting the optimal size of the ESS based on economic value. Considering stochastic models for wind power and electricity price, we develop a finite-horizon periodic-review Markov decision process (MDP) model to seek the optimal manag… Show more

“…The contemporary development of wind energy, challenges and future recommendations are deliberated in [6]. The wind energy potential and power law assessment in Malaysia, economic value assessment analyzed for an optimal sizing of an energy storage system and integration of digital control techniques based on power electronics converters are described in [7][8][9].…”

“…Determining an installation site for an ESS is a major consideration in planning the coordinated system under the stochastic nature of power generation and load [19,20]. Furthermore, an optimal management policy was designed to maximize benefits and select an optimal storage size [21]. In short, the proper operation and planning strategies of an ESS can help wind farm operators and power system operators minimize their operational costs under an intermittent power supply.…”

“…In recent years, there are many researchers dealing with such renewable energy problems [1][2][3][4][5][6]. Furthermore, conventional day-ahead unit commitment (UC) is insufficient for safe operation of power systems.…”
