Economic Sustainability of Early Potato Production in the Mediterranean Area

Abstract: The interactions between a given commercial enterprise, its territory and development, have become a key issue in recent years. Theories of economic development tell us that a territory may undergo development provided viable, economically sustainable commercial activities exist. Based on the latter postulate, the present paper analyzes the economic sustainability of farming enterprises growing early potatoes in a Mediterranean setting. In particular, the study was conducted in south-eastern Sicily, island in … Show more

Tomatoes are cultivated in a plastic mulched/drip irrigated production system.…”

“…Ragusa Province, despite being the primary Sicilian production area, during last ten years, showed a decrease both in terms of greenhouse tomato area (−7.3%) and harvested production (−27.4%) for several structural and commercial problems. Therefore, in order to better understand the profitability of Sicilian greenhouse cherry tomato production and determine its weaknesses, an economic analysis of farms is needed, as was done in similar studies [16][17][18][19], since economic sustainability is the most important factor for the adoption of a crop, as it ensures the farm's long-term competitiveness [20][21][22][23][24]. In this context, the aim of this paper was to analyze the economic profitability of Sicilian greenhouse cherry tomato cultivated in the Ragusa Province.…”

“…There are many weed management techniques that can be lead to reduced herbicide dependence, as direct-seeding, competitive varieties, increased seeding rates, strategic fertilizer placement, growing silage and cover crops, all these have excellent potential to suppress weed growth (Harker and Blackshaw, 2009). Crop residues hold a great prospect for meeting some of those demands and have more readily applicable in agro ecosystems (Alsaadawi et al, 2013;Testa et al, 2014;Sgroi et al, 2014). This approach (Crop residue) can be used in weeds management by two ways; it can be used by selecting an appropriate residue of crop variety then incorporating it in soil, Also it can used by applying residues or straw as mulches on soil surface in a rotational sequence that allows residues to remain in the field (Alsaadawi and Dayan, 2009).…”
