Economic Justification for Fracturing Moderate to High Permeability Formations in Sand Control Environments

Abstract: This paper discusses case histories of more than seventy completions requiring sand control. Approximately half of these wells were gravel packed (both slurry and water packs) between 1990 and 1995 while the remaining completions were fracture stimulated (frac-packs) from 1992 through 1995. The case histories include: geopressured oil reservoirs of moderate permeability, normal pressured high perm oil and gas formations, partially depleted high perm gas sands, and shallow dry gas formations. Results of bottom … Show more

“…Melting a cubic meter of hydrates releases approximately 170 cubic meters of gas, according to research. This supports oil and gas corporations' increasing interest in the production of gas hydrates [7]. However, silt formation, wellbore collapse, and low productivity make marine gas hydrate resource exploitation difficult [8].…”

“…All five completions were fracpacked with screens in place; this is standard BP Amoco practice based on knowledge gained from extensive experience (4)(5)(6)(7) . The perforated intervals varied from 122' to 161' MD and from 94' to 139' TVD.…”

“…5 During the acid injection (10% HCl) on the TA-3 well, initial injection rate was 4 BPM at 11,000 psi bottom hole pressure. By the end of the acid injection phase, while still at 4 BPM, the pressure had built to 11,700 psi.…”
