Economic Integration and Democracy: An Empirical Investigation

Abstract: We study whether economic integration fosters the process of democratization and the channels through which this might happen. Our analysis is based on a large panel dataset of countries between 1950 and 2014. We instrument actual trade with predicted trade constructed by estimating a time-varying gravity equation similar to Feyrer (2009). We find that economic integration has a positive effect on democracy, driven by trade with democratic partners and stronger for countries with lower initial levels of econom… Show more

“…Based on the differences between younger and older democracies, a learning effect is expected through increased levels in cultural and interpersonal globalisation in democracies with lower democracy stocks – similar to the argument of Magistretti and Tabellini (2019) who scrutinised the effects of global trade flows on democracies. This may be called the democratic catch-up effect, where democracies with low democracy stocks have more potential to improve their democratic qualities in terms of freedom, equality and control.…”

“…This allows us to construct an instrument for the actual high skill intensive trade flows on the basis of geography. Our approach is based on the gravity model (Anderson, 2011 andAnderson andvan Wincoop, 2003) and closely follows Feyrer (2019), Blanchard and Olney (2017), Pascali (2017) and Magistretti and Tabellini (2020). We begin by constructing estimates of "predicted trade flows" of high skill intensive products.…”

“…For this reason, as a final robustness check we estimate the static equation 5 using PPML estimator. A similar approach for additional robustness checks is also employed by Magistretti and Tabellini (2019) for the dynamic panel data model. We find that, with respect to the key variables, the PPML model yields results qualitatively similar to the dynamic panel data model estimated through system GMM approach presented in Section 4.4.…”
