Economic Impact Among Family Caregivers of Patients With Advanced Ovarian Cancer

Abstract: This economic analysis of caregiving in patients with advanced ovarian cancer reports the significant burden that cancer treatment places on both families and society. These findings underscore the importance, when appropriate, of including valid estimates of the cost of informal caregiving when evaluating the cost-effectiveness of cancer treatments.

“…Caregivers experienced three main types of cost: the cost of informal care time ( n = 13), OOPCs ( n = 6) and costs related to the impact on the caregivers' work ( n = 12). Four studies (Angioli et al, ; Chai, Guerriere, Zagorski, & Coyte, ; Chai, Guerriere, Zagorski, Kennedy, & Coyte, ; Li et al, ) only reported an overall value for the combined costs of care time and time lost from work‚ with one study (Angioli et al, ) also including some OOPCs. The remaining studies reported discrete values for the cost of informal care time (47%, n = 9), OOPCs (26%, n = 5) and costs related to the impact on the caregivers' work (42%, n = 8).…”

“…Four studies only reported aggregated costs of informal care, including a combination of costs related to care time, time lost from work and/or OOPCs. These estimates ranged from $750 to $12,334 per month (Angioli et al, ; Chai et al, , ; Li et al, ). These studies included different costs in their measurements, which partially explains the wide range of estimates.…”

“…A recent economic analysis of caregiving in advanced ovarian cancer patients demonstrated that, in addition to the patient, there are significant burdens that cancer treatment puts on the patients' families and the society at large (Angioli et al 2015). Given the complexity and often prolonged nature of the disease, the life of patient with ovarian cancer and potentially the family members face multiple challenges, including financial toxicity.…”
