Economic evaluations of interventions designed to prevent mental disorders: a systematic review

Abstract: Indicated types of interventions for the prevention of depression and anxiety appeared to be particularly good value-for-money and most of these studies were modelled evaluations. Unfortunately, many such interventions are still not routinely provided. Future trials of preventive interventions for mental disorders need to include robust economic evaluations so that the economic impact of such interventions from the individual study participant perspective can be determined.

“…In the fields of psychiatry and mental healthcare, prevention and early intervention are crucially important and widely accepted as effective strategies to reduce the number of patients with serious psychiatric disorders and ultimately medical/healthcare related costs [112]- [114]. In order to develop a reliable and effective strategy based on clinical evidence, the identification of an objective biomarker for psychiatric disorders is essential because it could contribute to the early detection of warning signs for pathogenic and/or pathological changes resulting in the development of these illnesses [115].…”

“…The highest score in our review was 23.5, and the lowest score was 7. Several reviews of economic evaluations have also adopted the CHEERS checklist [19][20][21][22][23][24][25][26], but to our knowledge, our review is the first to apply its use to the field of pathology tests. We also analyzed associations between study factors and the overall CHEERS score.…”
