Economic burden of colorectal cancer in Iran in 2012

Abstract: Background: Colorectal cancer is one of the most common cancers in Iran. However little is known about the economic burden associated with this cancer in Iran. The aim of this study was to estimate the economic burden of colorectal cancer in Iran in the year 2012. Methods: We used the prevalence-based approach and estimated direct and indirect costs of all colorectal cancer cases in 2012. To estimate the total direct costs, we model the treatment process of colorectal cancer patients in initial and continuing… Show more

“…Indirect costs were calculated from productivity losses of patients and their families due to absence from work and daily activities caused by illness or patient care, calculated using the human capital approach. 19 For collecting and calculating the required data on indirect costs, 2 methods were used simultaneously because of the need to obtain 1-year-old data from the studied patients and in order to minimize the possible recall bias. First, indirect costs were calculated using data obtained directly from the patients and their families.…”

“…The purpose of measuring the economic burden of disease is to provide the most realistic evidence needed for policy-making, designing and managing health plans, prioritizing strategic investigations about population health, developing and dedicating human and financial resources, and enhancing the capacities of organizations in designing, implementing, and assessing cost-effective interventions of prevention, treatment, and rehabilitation [ 11 , 13 , 14 ]. Despite the important role the economic burden of cancer cases plays for decision makers in allocating budget to important programs in Iran, there are only a few studies conducted in this area [ 15 ā€“ 18 ]. Hence, this is an attempt to provide a prevalence-based estimate of all costs associated with oral cancer from a societal perspective in Iran in 2014.…”

“…The economic burden of CRC in Iran was estimated at US$298,148,718 in 2012. Concering the high economic burden and mortality rate of colorectal cancer on the health care organizations, policies should be approved to reduce the disease and increase the prevention and early diagnosis of CRC (3). Studies show that CRC is one of the most preventable cancers if detected early (4).…”
