Economic appraisal of using genetics to control Streptococcus agalactiae in Nile tilapia under cage and pond farming system in Malaysia

Abstract: Disease outbreaks have been seen as the major threat to sustainable aquaculture worldwide. Injectable vaccines have been one of the few strategies available to control the diseases, however, the adoption of this technology globally is limited. Genetic selection for disease resistance has been proposed as the alternative strategy in livestock and aquaculture. Economic analysis for such strategies is lacking and this study assesses the economic worth of using tilapia fingerlings resistant to Streptococcosis in b… Show more

“…Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) has become one of the most widely farmed aquaculture species because of its rapid growth, ability to adapt to different environments, disease resistance, and high protein content in the flesh [3,4]. Recently, tilapia farming practices have shifted from extensive to intensive commercial production systems [5,6]. However, disease outbreaks have emerged as the main obstacle to sustainable intensive tilapia farming globally.…”

“…However, disease outbreaks have emerged as the main obstacle to sustainable intensive tilapia farming globally. Finding ways to prevent diseases will be crucial to address this challenge as tilapia production continues to intensify [6]. Antibiotics have traditionally been used in commercial fish farms to prevent disease transmission.…”

“…Over the past thirty years, Nile Tilapia ( Oreochromis niloticus ) has ascended to the forefront of freshwater aquaculture, reaching a global market valuation of US $7.9 billion as of 2020, being cultivated in more than 120 of different nations [ 1 , 2 ]. The cultivation of Nile Tilapia has transitioned from predominantly extensive farming practices to the proliferation of intensive, commercial aquaculture operations due to a rapid reproductive rates and pronounced solvability [ 3 ].…”

Disease outbreaks have been regarded as the major obstacle to Nile tilapia farming worldwide [ 1 ]. Fish pathogenic bacteria, especially Streptococcus agalactiae, outbreaks cause high mortality rates in Nile tilapia farming with losses being reported up to 70% [ 2 ].…”
