Economic and care considerations of Marfan syndrome

Abstract: Marfan syndrome is a rare multisystem disease of the connective tissue, which affects multiple organ systems. advances in healthcare have doubled the life-expectancy of patients over the past three decades. to date, there is no comprehensive review that consolidates economic considerations and care for marfan patients. Areas covered: Present research suggests that there may be a link between treatment pattern, disease progression and economic costs of Marfan syndrome. It indicates that an early detection of th… Show more

“…These interventions have proven lifesaving, as well as life-extending [5,73]. However, the burden of MFS on quality of life, and the economic stress, for both patients and their families, remains substantial [74,75]. In more recent years major efforts have been made to discover and develop therapeutics for MFS [31][32][33]76].…”

“…Although regular monitoring, prophylactic medication and timely surgical intervention can significantly postpone the progression of disease and reduce the occurrence of cardiovascular accidents, there is still a large proportion of patients with CEL who have received treatment only in the later stages of the disease 8. During clinical practice, we have found that there hardly any patients proceed with regular follow-up visits with cardiovascular specialists.…”

“…Predictive, preventive, and personalized medicine (PPPM) increased life expectancy to nearly normal because elective replacement of the proximal aorta is performed before aortic dissection or rupture develop (3). Care of Marfan patients is a personalized concept, which includes living conditions and family planning of the individual (4,5). To further optimize PPPM in MFS, it is crucial to identify possible risk factors for aortic events and cardiovascular death.…”
