Greenhouse tomato cultivation plays an important role in Sicily, being the primary production area in Italy, due to its favorable pedo-climatic conditions that permit extra-seasonal productions. In Sicily, more than half of greenhouse tomato production is derived from the Province of Ragusa on the southeastern coast, where especially cherry tomato typologies are cultivated. Over the last decade, the Ragusa Province has registered a decrease both in terms of greenhouse tomato area and harvested production due to several structural problems that would require restructuring of the tomato supply chain. Thus, since recognition of real costs and profitability of tomato growing is a vital issue, both from the perspective of the farm, as well as from that of the entrepreneur, the aim of this paper was to analyze the economic sustainability of Sicilian greenhouse cherry tomato cultivated in the Ragusa Province. In particular, an economic analysis on 30 representative farms was conducted in order to estimate production costs and profits of greenhouse cherry tomato. According to our results, the lack of commercial organization, which characterizes the small farms we surveyed, determines low contractual power for farmers and, consequently, low profitability.

SUMMARYThe paper analyses socio-demographic and production potentials and opportunities for agri-tourism development. The research was carried out on holdings in the northern regions of Montenegro and Croatia. The focus is placed on family holdings with agriculture being the primary activity. The results show presence of certain production and socio-demographic preconditions for development of agri-tourism as a supplementary activity on holdings. In future, agri-tourism could encourage development of rural communities surveyed. Respondents identify state institutions as the key players in agri-tourism development. Agricultural holdings are not sufficiently networked, either vertically or horizontally, with the state and local institutions. Future agri-tourism development in Montenegro and Croatia should be based on sustainable development principles.

Proper material selection enhances both desired physical and meta-physical properties of the end user products. Due to the growing awareness of the environmental issues as well as the industrial sustainability, the Natural Fiber Composites (NFCs) have recently emphasized to be implemented in various industrial applications. The final product features of such composites depend on the integrated characteristics of both matrix and fillers properties. Selecting an appropriate natural fiber type to form an NFC is affected by several factors and criteria. Up-to-date, natural fibers are evaluated regarding limited number of criteria. This study, introduces a proper integrated evaluation and selection scheme for the natural fibers and their capabilities considering integrated evaluation. Results demonstrate that better evaluation of natural fibers regarding wide range of criteria would lead to better decisions regarding selecting the suitable NFCs for industrial applications and enhance achieving better performance. Such evaluations should consider combined economic and environmental characteristics as well as technical ones. New potential fiber types can be discovered and utilized through better evaluations using combined desired criteria.
