Economic analysis of desalination technologies in the context of carbon pricing, and opportunities for membrane distillation

Abstract: The economics membrane distillation (MD) and common seawater desalination methods including multi effect distillation (MED), multistage flash (MSF) and reverse osmosis (RO) are compared. MD also has the opportunity to enhance RO recovery, demonstrated experimentally on RO concentrate from groundwater. MD concentrated RO brine to 361,000 mg/L total dissolved solids, an order of magnitude more saline than typical seawater, validating this potential. On a reference 30,000 m 3 /day plant, MD has similar economics … Show more

“…Filtration may also be used to remove scaling the bulk, such as in the study by Kesieme et al where a cartridge filter captured calcium scale, allowing high recovery of groundwater RO concentrate with MD [127]. While ultrafiltration is good for removing suspended solids and colloids, NF can be an effective pretreatment for rejecting organic matter and removing hardness from feed water.…”

“…On the other hand, regarding the O&M cost estimate, the waste disposal cost is not included in this study despite the fact that it accounts for a remarkable proportion (3~19%) of the total O&M cost. This is based on the fact that, to some extent, the cost of brine disposal could be partially or fully offset by the profits from selling salt from the desalination by-products [28,29]. Moreover, considering the diversity of the environmental problems of different countries caused by brine discharge and its varied processes, it is nearly impossible to identify a standard quantitative cost of waste disposal.…”

“…Thus, water flux in MD is negligibly affected by the feed water salinity. In other words, MD can be used for desalinating hypersaline feed streams or to achieve high water recovery desalination [11][12][13][14][15][16]. Given the discontinuity of the liquid phase across the membrane and a small hydraulic pressure on the membrane surface, MD is less susceptible to membrane fouling compared to RO, and hence does not require extensive pre-treatment [7].…”
