Economic analyses of stress urinary incontinence surgical procedures in women

Abstract: Although CEA for SUI surgery is a burgeoning field, study comparisons remain difficult due to some variability, including health care delivery systems. As women live longer, long-term data will become critical as complications and reoperations can affect the real cost of SUI corrective procedures. Neurourol. “…Further studies to analyze cost of treatment using methods such as incremental cost of illness models, which are more accurate than reimbursement, are needed. While data regarding the direct, indirect, and personal cost of treatment for SUI is robust, 23,42–44 data on indirect and personal cost of POP is more limited and may be underestimated in this study. The primary drivers of our cost figures, especially for POP, represented direct costs of treatment.…”

“…That was a more complex study than ours, since it followed up patients for up to 10 years. However, a published meta-analysis by Rawlings and Zimmern ( 8 ) in 2016 was inconclusive to compare cost-efficiency of different surgical techniques; they affirmed that there is variation of results according to surgeons, technique and different regions. Maybe direct comparison as done in our study is the best way to answer this question.…”

“…RT more costly than laparoscopic colposuspension is equally effective as or less effective than open colposuspension with similar costs, and injectable agents are less effective but also more costly than RT (29). In a systematic review (30), costs related to surgical procedures were classified on Table 4.…”
