In the 20th anniversary year of the European Geopark Network, and 5 years on from the receipt of the UNESCO label for the geoparks, this research focuses on geotourism contents and solutions within one of the most recently designated geoparks, admitted for membership in 2013: the Sesia Val Grande UNESCO Global Geopark (Western Italian Alps). The main aim of this paper is to corroborate the use of fieldtrips and virtual tours as resources for geotourism. The analysis is developed according to: i) geodiversity and geoheritage of the geopark territory; ii) different approaches for planning fieldtrip and virtual tours. The lists of 18 geotrails, 68 geosites and 13 off-site geoheritage elements (e.g., museums, geolabs) are provided. Then, seven trails were selected as a mirror of the geodiversity and as container of on-site and off-site geoheritage within the geopark. They were described to highlight the different approaches that were implemented for their valorization. Most of the geotrails are equipped with panels, and supported by the presence of thematic laboratories or sections in museums. A multidisciplinary approach (e.g., history, ecology) is applied to some geotrails, and a few of them are translated into virtual tours. The variety of geosciences contents of the geopark territory is hence viewed as richness, in term of high geodiversity, but also in term of diversification for its valorization.

“…Therefore, in the environmental protection of the geopark, it is advocated to select local residents as geopark conservationists to carry out daily patrols to prevent uncivilized behaviors, and to give appropriate rewards and remuneration to raise the residents' awareness of conservation, and increase the enthusiasm of participation at the same time. In addition, we can introduce the concept of ecomuseum, which is a tool for participatory management of the territory's natural and cultural heritage [78,79]. It can promote the spontaneous protection of geoheritage by local residents through the interpretation of geoheritage, and carry out publicity activities to truly achieve bottom-up community participation.…”

The Xiangxi UNESCO Global Geopark (XUGG) contained the largest karst red stone forest landscape and the Global Standard Stratotype-section and Points (GSSPs) in the Cambrian System. Those geoheritage contribute to a better understanding of Earth’s evolution. Therefore, it is of great significance to conduct geoscience research and geosciences popularization in the XUGG. In this study, we took the XUGG as the research object, and analyzed the situation of the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats in the development process of geopark popular science tourism by using SWOT analysis method, in order to realize the sustainable development of geoparks in popular science tourism. The results show that: the XUGG continent possesses geoheritage, good facilities and unique advantages of popular science development. In the new era, we should optimize the development of popular science tourism in Geoparks, realize the two-way interactive participation of popular science, explore the community participation model of popular science tourism, and promote the development of rustic areas with unique geological resources. Then, it not only facilitates the broadcasting and popularization of earth sciences, but also contributes to the sustainable development of geotourism.

I processi di sviluppo dall’era post-bellica sino ai giorni nostri hanno decretato direttrici economiche che, considerando il territorio tra Augusta e Siracusa come una carta bianca e uniforme che poteva essere riscritta, hanno ingenerato esternalità negative a tutto tondo, di cui solo la vertiginosa crescita della ricchezza pro-capite ha potuto giustificare la cieca deriva. Nel momento in cui la ricchezza diminuisce e la disoccupazione si palesa, a causa del manifestarsi di iniziali ma inequivocabili processi di deindustrializzazione, ha luogo la sfida del recupero dell’identità e della scelta di percorsi alternativi di sviluppo del territorio. È in questo scenario che l’ipotesi della costituzione di un ecomuseo può essere considerata strategica nel consegnare il potere di scelta, per far fronte agli iniziali scenari di crisi, alle comunità locali per consentire loro di reinterpretare il territorio e le relative dotazioni come possibile alternativa di sviluppo.
