“…The great intraspecific variability in Caspiohydrobia grimmi suggests unstable environmental conditions particularly with regard to salinity and temperature changes. Comparable shell-morphological reactions have been demonstrated in other ecosystems and habitats, respectively (see e.g., Bandel et al 1997;Bandel and Riedel 1998;Riedel et al 2001). The environmental change in the Aral Sea during the last millennium is directly mirrored by the sequence of five to six different faunal assemblages found in the cores.…”

“…The type species of Pyrgula De Cristofori & Jan, 1832, P. annulata (Linnaeus, 1758), lives in freshwater lakes and springs in Italy and Dalmatia (Welter-Schultes 2012). Shell morphology, anatomy and protoconch characteristics are very similar to Pontocaspian Pyrgulinae, e.g., some species of Turricaspia (compare also discussion in Riedel et al 2001). However, molecular evidence suggests that Pyrgula annulata is only distantly related to the Pontocaspian species flock within the Pyrgulinae, with the last common ancestor dating back to the late Miocene (Wilke et al 2007).…”

“…Eighteen specimens of Falsipyrgula pfeiferi were collected from the littoral zone in Lake Eǧirdir, Isparta, Turkey (38 11.06 To compare these species conchologically, detailed shell documentation of the mentioned species are provided with SEM images; only Pyrgula annulata is not covered here because it was recently described in detail by Riedel et al (2001). Published images and descriptions of radulae and of anatomical characters are reviewed and re-evaluated together with new own observations.…”

“…In addition to the traditional teleoconch characteristics ( Fig. 3), the protoconch ornamentation, proportions and shape are now generally accepted as useful taxonomic characters not only in marine gastropods with a planktotrophic larva in their ontogeny (e.g., Bandel 1982;Riedel et al 2001;Kaim 2004).…”
