Ecology of colonizing populations of the figfly Zaprionus indianus (Diptera, Drosophilidae) in Porto Alegre, Southern Brazil

Abstract: ABSTRACT. Ecological parameters such as trophic niche overlap and niche breadth were computed from the frequency of all drosophilid species collected in 2001 and 2002, in the urban area of Porto Alegre city, Brazil. Independently of place, drosophilids community composition and components breeding or feeding sites, the highest frequencies of Zaprionus indianus (Gupta, 1970) were obtained during seasons with higher average temperatures, especially during summer. From a total of the 19,146 individuals of Z. ind… Show more

“…Of these species, those belonging to the Drosophila and Zaprionus genera were also collected associated to fruits in other studies (CARSON, 1971;SILVA et al, 2005;GARCIA et al, 2008), demonstrating their versatility in resource use. The use of fungi as a trophic resource has probably played a more significant role, in comparison to previous notions, in the evolutive success of Neotropical species belonging to the immigrans-tripunctata radiation of Drosophila.…”

“…BIZZO & SENE (1982) found less exotic species but a similar seasonality, an observation that, together with data from breeding sites, might corroborate the observations that Z. indianus is not excluding other species through competition (LEÃO & TIDON, 2004;SILVA et al, 2005a;VALIATI et al, 2005).…”

“…BONORINO & VALENTE, 1989;CASTRO & VALENTE, 2001;SILVA et al, 2005a). The lack of patterns is expected, because changes in the environmental conditions and resource availability are common between years and can modify the structure of drosophilid assemblages (DOBZHANSKY & PAVAN, 1950;PIPKIN, 1953), what is ultimately part of the evolutionary process (TIDON-SKLORZ & SENE, 1992).…”
