Ecology of a stream from upper Paraná River basin inhabited by Aspidoras fuscoguttatus Nijssen & Isbrüker, 1976 (Siluriformes, Callichthyidae)

Abstract: Most information on catfishes of the genus Aspidoras has focused species kept in aquaria, in non-natural conditions. Biotic and abiotic parameters of environment inhabited by Aspidoras fuscoguttatus, associated ichthyofauna, as well as strategies involved in the successful occupation of different microhabitats in a first order stream, located in São José do Rio Preto, São Paulo State, were investigated. Data collection was monthly performed at three segments (headwaters, middle course, and mouth) from August 1… Show more

“…As registered for many other streams from Serra do Mar (Uieda, 1984, Bizerril andAraújo, 1993;Britski et al, 1986, Castro andCasatti, 1997;Bizerril, 1994;Uieda and Barretto, 1999;Esteves and Lobón-Cerviá, 2001;Araujo and Garutti, 2003), the Characiformes was the best represented in the present study. Among the 22 registered species, four (18%) were not identified and others, in the Characidae group, were referred as Incertae Sedis (Lima et al, 2003) due to a lack of conclusive work about their monophily.…”

“…4 Kramer & Mehegan (1981), Araujo & Garutti (2003), Bozzetti & Schulz (2004) and Casatti et al (2006). By comparing fish species composition among stream groups, abiotic and spatial components explained together 33% of the variation (R adj 2 = 0.33, p < 0.0001).…”

“…Turbidity and conductivity may limit species occurrence in local fish assemblages. For example, the species of catfish Aspidoras fuscoguttatus Nijssen & Isbrücker, 1976 was already found in association with high levels of water turbidity (Araújo & Garutti, 2003) that may affect its diet (Casatti et al, 2009). In our sampled streams, a species of the same genus (Aspidoras sp.)…”
