Despite unprecedented global environmental changes with widespread health effects, and rapid advances in nursing knowledge and education, the concept of environment within the discipline remains restricted. Environmental health continues to be marginalized in nursing education and practice, with nurses struggling to get beyond the slogans to arrive at practical applications. Framed by ecohealth and radical ecopsychology theory (concerned with nature connection, individual wellness, and social/earth justice), this study employed an online survey (n = 40) with thematic content analysis. The study explored factors that influenced eco-consciousness, how it affected nursing work, and how it was integrated into practice The 40 participants from 3 Canadian provinces included 32 nurses employed in education and clinical practice and 8 student nurses. Three main themes emerged: awakening consciousness, challenges in the discipline and profession, and finding opportunities. In particular, the students expressed a need for early integration of environmental health teaching into curriculum. Results illustrate an ongoing knowledge–practice gap and highlight the frustration and dismay of nurses whose efforts remain marginalized. Motivations and opportunities for nurses to undertake an expanded role in adopting environmental health as central to the discipline and practice of nursing can and must be more intently harnessed. As curricular approaches are expanded, further inquiry is proposed into the role of both early experiences and nursing education to transform the response to the ecological crises of our times.

To maintain and improve skills for practice, health care professionals across all disciplines need to engage in ongoing professional development. However, helping clinicians learn and apply new knowledge in practice can be challenging. This article reports on a purpose-designed professional development programme targeting experienced practitioners of a particular music therapy, focusing on their cultural competency. The author conceptualised a workshop format with a relevant clinical scenario at its centre. She describes how she developed the programme, which she subsequently delivered to an international community of 57 practitioners attending professional development conferences. To capture participants’ reactions and evidence of their new thinking applied to an everyday clinical practice, she used Brookfield’s Critical Incident Questionnaire (CIQ). Her analysis of the data, which provided feedback on the training scenario and structured group discussion materials, found that this continuing professional development training workshop was effective in challenging clinicians to think differently, and to plan the application of their newly acquired knowledge to their everyday practice. This paradigmatic case study contributes new knowledge towards the current reform of health systems, where achieving person-centred health care depends on the ongoing professional development of established health practitioners. Replacing traditional health care, where the patient receiving treatment is accorded a passive role, person-centred health care engages patients’ active participation in their therapy. Practitioners who have graduated a while ago therefore need to change some of their ingrained practices and approaches in treating their clients and patients, which will then lead to improved health outcomes.

It can be observed that changing attitude towards the environment and fellow human beings manifests itself as a socially unsustainable relationship, which in different ways and at different levels manifests itself in social exclusion. Social exclusion is increasingly emerging as a phenomenon that is complex in nature and its solutions must be sought in the wicked problem approach, which is characteristic of complex problems and has significant ontological roots. At present, ontology should consider the much more complicated problem of what types of being are formed by both the natural and the cultural evolutionary processes. It can be argued that evolutionary ontology attempts to create a new image of the world and of humans – a new non-anthropocentric cosmology, i.e., a consistently philosophical culturological cosmology that takes into account reality in its real structure as a conflict between the spontaneous activity of nature and the socio-cultural activity of humans (Šmajs, 2008, p. 96). The reasons for social exclusion can be different, and its specific manifestations are various, and the same can be said about the phenomenon of social inclusion, which is the expression of the quality of other relationships and attitudes. Externally observable signs of social exclusion are more closely related to the concept of families at risk. A social risk family can be defined as a family that experiences difficult problems and has limited opportunities to provide favorable living conditions for the comprehensive development of all family members. More and more often it is associated with unsustainable cultural or non-cultural contexts, mainly related to non-ecological culture prosperity in the consumer society. It can be noted that this context in its current form (which includes manufacturing, consumption, material culture, and technology, and both the social, intellectual, and material life of humans) is quite anti-natural oriented in its principle. Unfortunately, the aggressive anti-natural sociocultural strategy permeated also the field of human upbringing and education (Šmajs, 2008, p. 194). At the beginning of the 21st century, it has emerged as the Anthropocene era in a broader sense, in which the geological characterization of the era is complemented by the characterization of the sustainability of public relations in a broader holistic perspective. The aim of the article is to consider a number of real cases in a broader perspective from the point of view of foster family pedagogy, identify the choice of foster care approaches and evaluate the results obtained. From the perspective of foster family pedagogy, foster parents and foster children are participants in the lifelong learning process, where the mutual influence and interaction of foster parents and foster children are studied. The authors evaluated real situations from the perspective of foster family pedagogy and children’s involvement in the family structure. The article also examines the influence of the foster family and its readiness to overcome the effects of Anthropocene unsustainability.
