Ecology and Physiology of Hibernation and Overwintering Among Freshwater Fishes, Turtles, and Snakes

Abstract: Summary 1. Freshwater fishes are the most northerly of freshwater ectotherms, followed by frogs. North American freshwater snakes, turtles, and salamanders do not range farther north than southernmost Canada. 2. Freezing and desiccation are the main challenges during terrestrial hibernation of ectotherms. Oxygen depletion, water balance, and ionic balance are the major problems for air breathing ectotherms that hibernate underwater. 3. The importance of accumulation of energy stores for overwintering among fis… Show more

“…In temperate regions, for example, many factors can impede obtaining complete annual proWles of plasma sex steroid levels; perhaps, the most obvious is the fact that most hiber nating animals are inaccessible and thus cannot be pro cessed directly. Furthermore, because hibernation in some species can last for 7-9 months (Gregory, 1982(Gregory, , 1984Ultsch, 1989;Sexton et al, 1992), a substantial portion of the annual cycle is unknown. Consequently, for many taxa, we have incomplete knowledge of seasonal sex steroid levels.…”

“…In fish, like in other poikilothermic organisms, the metabolic rate correlates with water temperature; the activity of fish in the temperate zone therefore usually decreases in winter (Ultsch, 1989). This low physiological activity may result in higher predation by homoeothermic predators such as birds or mammals (Stewart et al, 2005;Dekar et al, 2010).…”

“…Accordingly, hypoxia has been associated with decreased stamina in hermit crabs (Mowles et al, 2009) and with altered fish migration patterns and distance (Ultsch, 1989). Assuming similar side effects are likely in horseshoe crabs, oxygen deprivation and the resultant disturbance in homeostasis has the potential to disrupt normal functions, such as spawning, even after the horseshoe crabs are returned to their natural habitat.…”
