Ecology and diversity of freshwater shrimps in Banco National Park, Côte d’Ivoire (Banco River Basin)

Abstract: Shrimps are an important component of river invertebrate assemblages in tropical freshwater where they are a controlling group in food webs. In order to determine shrimp diversity in the Banco Basin (Côte d'Ivoire, West Africa) and examine whether the patterns of species distribution were related to environmental conditions, six sites were monitored. Sampling was conducted in 2008 during February, May, September and November using a long-handled net (25-cm diameter, 2-mm mesh). For each site, we measured envir… Show more

“…The benthic macroinvertebrate communities in the Banco stream basin in the Banco National Park (BNP) are not well known. The only studies available are the description of the freshwater shrimp Macrobrachium thysi , which is endemic to Côte d'Ivoire (Powell, ), and the ecology of shrimps (Camara et al ., ). Of concern is the fact that Banco Stream is subjected to anthropogenic disturbance (municipal waste waters), and surface run‐off potentially leading to its deterioration (Camara et al ., ).…”

“…Similar conclusions were drawn by Camara et al . (2009), studying the ecology of prawns in the Banco national park in Abidjan. Although ecological preference seems the main reason identified for the minimal overlap of prawn and intermediate host snail populations in this study, we cannot entirely exclude predation by the prawns as an explanatory factor for the negative correlation found.…”
