“…In addition to higher LIP values observed in both sexes, the mean ‘aggregation’ size λ values were >2, indicating active aggregation of both male and female, as suggested by Salifu & Hodgson (1987) and Verghese et al. (1988). Our results also reveal that factors such as block, crop growth stage, and location could influence BFT aggregation behaviour.…”

“…In this regard, the criteria outlined by Arbous & Kerrick (1951) were used to estimate the mean ‘aggregation’ size λ (Southwood & Henderson, 2000): where λ is the mean number of individuals in the aggregation for the probability level allocated to υ, is the sample mean, k is the dispersion parameter obtained from the negative binomial model, and υ is a function with χ 2 distribution with 2k degrees of freedom. In interpreting λ, we note that λ<2 indicates that aggregation is more due to an environmental effect and not to active behaviour of the insect, whereas λ>2 is an indication that the cause of aggregation is due to either factor, but especially active processes by the thrips (Salifu & Hodgson, 1987; Verghese et al., 1988). Field data collected in Matuu and Mbita were subjected to similar analyses.…”

“…Nevertheless, for T. palmi in mango (Mangifera indica L.), Verghese et al (1988) found that some of the transformations indeed eliminated the dependence between mean and variance, as well as stabilizing the latter. Among the transformations that did not solve the problem were √X+1 and X…”

“…But, the grower reported severe lesions on fruits in 2008, which led to discard of many of the fruits from organic mango export. Mango inflorescence is known to be attacked by Thrips palmi (Verghese et al, 1988). Also, Megalurothrips distalis (Karny), Thrips hawaiiensis and Haplothrips tenuipennis Bagnall have been recorded from Andhra Pradesh (Ramasubbarao and Thammiraju, 1994;Kannan and Rao, 2006a, b).…”
