Ecological Studies on the Lactobacillus Flora Associated with the Crop Epithelium of the Fowl

Abstract: The lactobacillus flora lining the crop of the chicken became established soon after hatching and adhered to the crop epithelium throughout the life of the bird: adhesion was unaffected by drastic changes in diet and was of widespread occurrence. Adhering lactobacilli were isolated from birds but not from mammals. Only these avian lactobacilli adhered to chicken crop epithelial cells. It is suggested that these Iactobacilli have formed a symbiotic relationship with the chicken and help to regulate the composit… Show more

“…In a high proportion of the chickens examined lactobacilli appeared to colonise the epithelium of the crop in preference to the lumen. The extensive colonisation of this organ by lactobacilli has been confirmed by microscopy (Fuller, 1973) and serves as a useful control with which to compare E. coli and Salmonella. E. coli were found to associate preferentially with the crop epithelium but in fewer chickens.…”

“…The isolation of an equal number of bacteria from an epithelium than from the associated luminal contents was the criterion used by Smith and Halls, (1968) and modified by Fuller (1973) to indicate a physical association between the bacteria and the epithelium. The number of occasions on which the viable bacterial counts obtained from the epithelia of the crop and caeca were higher than the counts from the contents of these organs for all the bacterial strains studied is shown in Table 3.…”

“…This is consistent with other studies which demonstrate the host specificity of adhesion of Lactobacillus spp. to chicken and rodent gastric epithelia (Fuller, 1973;Suegara t't al., 1975;Lin & Savage, 1984). Because adhesion of bacteria to mouse stomach epithelium was enhanced proportionally to the amount of the adhesion-promoting material added, it may be that adhesion is mediated by multiple binding sites on the bacterial cell surface.…”

“…Host specificity in the colonization of the gastrointestinal tract by lactobacilli has been demonstrated both in uivo and in vitro for a range of hosts (Fuller, 1973;Suegara et al, 1975;Barrow et al, 1980;Tannock et al, 1982;Lin & Savage, 1984). Savage (1972) proposed that adhesion of indigenous Lactobacillus spp.…”

“…For the administration of Lactobacillus culture to animals to be of practical use, the following conditions are essential: i) host specificity of the microorganism used (4,19), and ii) their ability to form stable populations in the gastrointestinal tract (20).…”
